USB Power Delivery (USB PD)

USB has evolved from a data interface into the primary provider of power for most devices as well. Because the new generation of USB accomplishes audio/video, data and power delivery, it is truly a single source for performance, power and convenience.

For USB Type-C based ports,USB PD enables a manufacturer to deliver power up to 100 watts. This increase means faster charging of your customer’s devices, and the ability to power things larger than a phone or camera, such as a printer, a tablet, laptop, workstation or even a monitor.

USB Power Delivery (USB PD)

Consumer Benefits

Customers upgrading their computer will be excited to learn about USB Power Delivery (USB PD). Key selling features of this product are faster charging and support for larger devices.

Make sure your customers understand, however, that USB PD only works when two USB PD devices are directly connected using a USB PD enabled cable.

Note: Standard USB power/charging is always present by default.

USB Type-C Cables and Connectors

Current USB Standard-A connectors are too large for new smaller form factor devices that are becoming thinner all the time. Plus, current USB connectors cause confusion over plug orientation and cable direction.

The new USB Type-C cables and connectors address these issues. USB Type-C cables/connectors are slim enough for phones and robust enough for laptops and tablets. Plus, the plug orientation as well as the cable direction is reversible - no more fussing over whether it’s upside down or not, or which end you plug in.

USB Type-C Alternate Modes

Permits a vendor or standards organization to utilize the
USB Type-C cable/connector to provide additional features.

The standardized alternate mode specifications available
today are:

  • DisplayPort 1.3 Alternate Mode (developed by VESA)
  • HDMI Alternate Mode (developed by HDMI Licensing, LLC)
  • MHL Alternate Mode (developed by MHL, LLC)

This means that a separate, dedicated port/cable/connector for devices supporting these technologies is no longer needed if the specific Alternate Mode is enabled on both devices.
The USB Type-C port takes care of the transfer.

A joint-port identification guideline has been established to ensure consumers can easily recognize what capabilities a USB Type-C host or device supports.

Many cable options will enter the market supporting different performance and power protocols.

Changes and the Consumer

Customers who are upgrading to a new device may not recognize this new cable or plug. This is an opportunity for you to explain the new USB technologies and how they can get the most out of them. It is important to make sure your customers know that they will need an adapter if they are connecting a new USB-Type C cable/connector to an older USB port.

Working in Harmony

To get the most out of the new USB technologies, all three products must offer the new feature – the host (e.g. the computer), the cable, and the device (e.g., external hard drive).

When working with customers, advise them that:

  • New products are hitting the market every month with these new USB technologies
  • There are adapters available to support the transition from standard USB cables/connectors to the new Type-C cables/connectors
  • They can future proof their purchase by understanding and supporting these new USB technologies

What Do the Logos Mean?

Look for the certified logos to identify new USB technologies. These logos mean that a product has met the highest standard in the industry and was tested to be compliant to the USB specification(s) and for interoperability as certified by the USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum).

Encourage your customers to look for these logos. They will be satisfied they are getting the latest technology. The designs for the various USB Speeds include a certified logo, a trident, and a Power Deliver trident.

New Certified USB Charger Logo

USB-IF Announces a New Certified USB Charger Logo
and Compliance Program

Based upon the USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery Specifications

Certified USB Chargers will:

  • Resemble a traditional power brick or wall wart
  • Enable faster charging
  • Be interoperable with compliant USB Type-C devices
  • Display a new logo identifying the power capability in watts
    • USB-IF anticipates 15W, 27W, 45W and 60W to be the most common wattage levels of chargers on the market
    • Any optional wattage levels can be supported with the Logo
    • 100W is also supported but this will be a niche at the high end
  • Be available in retail stores in early 2017
